the day after

Post by Beowolff » Fri Mar 10, 2006 4:29 am

my god, just got through watching, The Day After, again....after not seeing it since a young man many years ago.

dear lord...atomic war... so realistic that it took my breath away, again.

for an old movie, it is startlingly realistic and holds up as much today as it did way back then. yeah, the movie magic is dated, the haircuts are hippy-ishly long, the pants legs flared, silk shirts rampant.... but the events leading up to the nuclear strikes still sound VERY true to life. the USAF protocol and procedures, the Minutemen silo equipment, are all breathtakingly real, even for such an old film. the missle launches (in the heart of the USA---Kansas countryside) the bomb flashes, the cities destruction, the falling ash and soot afterwards.... the radiation burns and sickness a little later... god it gives me the willies... us struggling to get our rockets off before the Russians got theirs off.

Jason Robards should have got an Oscar for his brilliant performance in it.

and we came so friggin' close to it all... in real life... just like that. just like that.

every bastard that ever thought about pushing the big button should be forced to watch this movie till their eyes rot out.

I saw that movie years ago and it scared the hell out of me. I wouldn't mind seeing it again now- would probably have the same gut-punch effect.

Another good movie if you're interested is Testament (I think..). It focuses on a small town that was far enough from any major city that it suffered no immediate blast damage, but then came the radiation...

In the archaic sense of the word.

I remember "FailSafe" too

"It's all a plot to get our vital bodily fluids ,I tell you !!!"
