O-kay, EXACTLY which Vista do I order?
Jeeza petes!
I know I want Vista ... well want is kinna hard to say about Vista ... but I need to buy Vista Home Premium 64-bit for my new build. Easy, huh? But looking through Amazon no where does it simply say that. I want to be absolutely sure which one to get. One is Vista HP, but says nothing about 64-bit, one says 64-bit, but nothing about license, another three types say something else.
This does sound kinna dumb, but could I get a consensus EXACTY which box to click on Amazon?
Thanks,
F

Stu,
Save yersef a LOT of trouble and get an OEM version of XP Pro!!!!!!!
Easy to find.
Easy to use.
Less bitching.
It WORKS right out of the box once it's updated.
And you're already familiar with it.
So far you've impressed everyone with your innate ability ot see through the crap and make some damned wise decisions. Don't blow your score.
Or Wait for the Official Release of W7...if you dare.

Vista 64 sounds good, but you will probably not see any 64bit advantages as there are very few 64bit software written for the common man. There is a Internet Explorer 64bit but it isn't any faster than the 32bit version and there are no Flash drivers etc available, so many web sites can be viewed, but with out any fancey images etc.
I will admit though the laptop has vista 64 and I've had no major issues, but I'm comfortable with manipulating files, so I had little problems getting what I wanted up and running.
The new PC has XP all the way through.
(I am watching Windows 7 closely, so far it looks like Vista with some tweaks)

How soon will Windows 7 be available? It's in beta now and I've seen only very good reviews for it. I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit and it runs great.

From what I have seen they are hopeing to get it out before the end of the year. I ran the beta and really liked it. It ran well and found drivers for all of my hardware with no probs so a huge thumbs up there.

The Windows 7 public Release Candidate may be coming in May.
So, what is a RC? Can anyone DL it? Does it cost anything? Can it be installed all by is wee self to run a system? Does it ~run out~?
I've heard that it may ~run out~ Aug 1 and that the full retail version may be available soon after that; earlier than previously estimated ... I've also heard that it will be later than that, so ppppppp!
Sorry folks, I've found that I'm reeeeeally bad at making decisions about expensive computer parts, but NOT getting Windows XP 64-bit is one that I've FINALLY made. Read here for some of my ruminations.
Right now I'm sweating over either getting an 80gig Intel X25-M SSD or a 300gig Velociraptor for my C: drive. Gah! I'm buying a Creative X-Fi Titanium sound card and a CoolIT Domino A.L.C CPU Cooler this weekend.

I wouldn't buy Vista.
My Joystick packup was down to Vista last night. The damn thing was designed to interfere. That said XP is old news so I'd be looking out for 7

The one that says "XP" on it
Seriously, I had Vista on my last work laptop because it was "corporate IT policy" to switch from an OS that everyone was happy with and knew how to use, to one that only kept the IT department busy with help desk calls! When I built my new PC six months ago I stuck with XP - at the moment it does everything I want and all my software and hardware runs on it, so why change I figured. I can always move to Vista or something else in the future?
Unless you really have HW or SW that needs Vista, then I would stick with XP, and save yourself a shedload of grief.

The windows 7 RC is free to download from the M$ site.
I installed it on a virtual machine. This requires 512 even to install. Goes smoothly even when considered that it shares the hdd, cpu and memory...
I runs ok... It is pretty Vistish though...
if there is such will of a community I could install il2 to check if it works.
