Safety First

Over the last twenty years I've always been pissed due to being handed the onerous position of "Safety Spook" at every freakin' place I've worked.
And, as always, I got out of it by actually taking the job seriously, which of course made me immensely "popular" with with co-workers and supervisors alike.

I swore I'd never take the job again.

Uh, I lied.

The Program Director for PHI Air Medical's New Mexico Program noted that my method of getting peoples' attention was really starting to "annoy" some of the Medical Crew.

So he put his arm about my shoulders and walked me to his office and gave me a "hard sell" and reeled me in hook, line, and sinker.
The bait being that he "really enjoyed seeing some things actually getting done once I pissed somebody off."

It's a dubious distinction...

...But I get to:
a) Piss people off on a regular basis (nothing new there);
b) FORCE the idiots to leave the mechanics alone (this is a new one);
c) FORCE the idiots to stay in the High Traffic walkways instead of stumbling around getting in the way;
d) FORCE the idiots to put their medical waste (AKA HAZARDOUS MATERIAL) into the proper containers;
e) FORCE the idiots to start thinking like humans again;

and last, but Certainly Not the Least...

f) As NM Safety Director I answer ONLY to the Human Resources Director and the Owner/CEO of PHI!!!!

Life is Good, and once again I am immensely popular.

Safety are important,

pi-lots is dumb,

mechanics and other ramp-ish personnel are similarly limited.

They need tender loving care,

applied vigorously up the arse if need be.

I do NOT envy you. I just stepped down from a similar job where I work. Biggest difference was that I was accountable to my boss. So you know how that safety program worked. "Talk the talk, but don't bother us with trying to make us walk the walk" Keep the District safety worms off our ass etc etc.

Told 'em to get a new scape goat, I was tired and ready to make some real waves.

I was gracefully relieved of command.

Good luck is all I have to say. That job is not an enviable position, even if you are keeping the knot heads healthy and alive.

The way I look at it is:

If I piss off enough of the idiots, they may actually complain to my superiors. Enough complaints and maybe they'll leave me alone.
If I can't pis off the local idiots, then I can start pissing off my superiors. Enough bitchin' from them and ...

Well, we can always hope.

I always figured Safety Programs, Rules, Regs, Guidelines, etc. were designed for those with no common sense anyway.
