Well, there's always a lower limit to how small you can go, but the tenet I use is 'less is more'. Most fonts don't work well when working on the subatomic level. Keep it simple. Square, blocky fonts are best.
Ariel works good all the way down to 8 pts. If you want smaller, start with a larger font size an and resize down. Another factor may be your graphics software. PS, PSP and GIMP all work well. Other software may not.
I sometimes need to go down there among the electron clouds and erase or decrease the opacity of some of the fuzzies and darken other faded lines for the smallest work to make it clearer.
