The purpose of the expedition to recover the Lockheed P-38 "Lighning" aircraft is to make these significant artefacts of world history available to museums and air-shows world-wide.
Lost Squadron Recovery does not start from scratch. Already in 1992 one of the planes was recovered. This bird is flying again and can be seen on air shows all over the world.
The IceScope did prove: all five P-38 still covered by snow and ice are still in a good shape.
More information about it here, if you´re not already informed:

As far as our planning goes -- we're still looking for workers. One reason for this is that we've had to turn down some applicants because they don't meet the criteria required for the job. But there's still time! People who aren't afraid of cold weather and hard work are welcome.
They are there and we will get them
Come on join !

I'd like to join in something like that but I don't think I'd qualify. Hell, just looking into my deep freeze give me the shivers (literally).

I would like to - but I can´t.
I´m visiting evning school for 4 years, so until 2009 earliest.
It´s a further education, giving me the technician / engineer title if I´m succesful.
But I can´t break my education to help the LSR, even if I would really like to go.

Our airport manager, a military aircraft/history buff came up with an interesting question. If the polar ice caps and glaciers are melting, why did they have to dig 290 feet through ice to get to the P-38's?

Pressure
Ever done that experiment with a weighted cord and a block of ice?
Add to that the fact that the glacier is constantly on the move (due to the same principle).
Of course they could wait another 20 years and just go in and load them on trucks, recover them from the ocean bed whatever ,but there will probably be no gas left to fly them

Airway,
Well, not exactly...The aircraft are probably still property of the US government....It doesn't make a whole lot of sense....If your ship sunk in international waters its probable up for grabs...But the P-38's and B-17 landed in Greenland...a territory of Denmark (why would they want Greenland?) and ally of the US during the Great Patriotic War.....

It
does give pause for thought....
Maybe their counting on Global Warming to reveal a hibernating Glycol-blooded frog the size of New York waiting to hand the
world to them?
Damn thing would probably have a name, too. And a tongue that would snap out to New Brunswick.

...and wear your feckin' mask!!!!!

Sorry Igor, but they have confirmation of this from all the officially relevant organizations. The Danish government has certified this and the US army has long since relinquished any right to the planes.
Don´t you think they figure that out before starting the recovery?
That would be bad to recover the planes and go home with nothing.
