If you couldn't make them work 48 hours a week, it wouldn't be worth getting the Lithuanians over here ;)

It should also be a matter of personal choice.

The law is there to prevent employers making you work excessive hours.
should employees not also have the right to work the hours they wish and if that means more than 48, well that is their choice?

Though of course don't forget that does not apply to the military, you can work them until they drop, no questions asked.

I think this is called the opt-out thingie. Employers can have an agreement with employees if they want to work more than 48 hrs per week.

Of course diffrent regulations apply for the military, police, sailors, etc. And thre are regulations about breaks, days off, etc.

Is it that workers work a 48 hour week or is it that they don't get paid overtime unless they work over 48 hours per week!

Look at the situation with autoworkers in Detroit. Autoworkers routinely work in excess of 40 hours a week; they routinely get paid well for overtime. The situation for the employer is that it’s cheaper to pay overtime than to hire and train new employees. There is no additional overhead (i.e. heath insurance, retirement, etc) involved in having an employee work overtime.

There's another thing to think about if in fact employee are required to work 48 hour weeks; a reduction in daylight crime...no...I'm serious! I took a course years ago that explained that the primary reason for compulsory education was to reduce daylight juvenile crime...not to actually educate the population. There people in the US that have high school diplomas that can't read or write!

In Pland maybe - here in Germany, most companies have accounts for overtime up to 120 hours.
You can use these hours for holydays but in most cases the compny has so much to do that it is hard to find a date where you can stay home.
If the money for these hours is paid out together with your normal wage, then you have to pay more taxes.
For a single man, age 30-40, tax class I, these taxes eat up moste of the advantage of getting paid fot the overtime.

ok,we had the debate yesterday.

Andit was easier for us to defend 48hrs than for others to make their 38 hrs idea accepted. Most reasons were such as less hours means more ppl to be emploeyd what means more money to be paid for insurance, trainings, etc.

Well,we passsed the debte;

Thanks for all the support and opinions;)

Airway,

Overtime in the US is paid as 'time and a half' , i.e. 150% regular pay, however, the taxes witheld are approximately 40%; which is a little misleading because at the end of year (tax time) we still only pay at the 28% rate, so we get a tax refund. I only get overtime two or three times a year, so I always consider it extra money; however, my wife considers it 'her' money.

Macca,

Interesting debate.

Well, it was a short debate, as we had another one in schedule, devoted to pros and cons of legalization of gay relationships. That was kinda stormy one;)

Macca, why not try going to the TUC ( Trade union council) site for some info? It must have something for you there.
Mind you it will be against the 48 hr week, but at least you will get a jist of the pros and cons.
