Local Air Show

Post by :FI:Nellip » Sun Jul 30, 2006 7:50 pm

I took the family to a local air show today - Wings and Wheels - at a grass strip about 5 miles from where I live. Theme was supposed to be 1930's but there were plenty of vintage aircraft, motorbikes and cars from 1920's to date. I took some photos

I have no idea what the bikes are, but I know some of you guys might.

The large aircraft is an An2 - russian built in the late 1940's - stall speed of 32 knots so we got some very slow fly pasts.

The 5 biplanes are Tiger Moths which did a cool display.

I have plenty more pics and will put up a few more when I have the time.

The bikes are BSA, Triumph, and a nice Norton, each around 500-750 cc's worth o' engine- fast enough to decapitate Lawrence of Arabia on a picturesque english rotary. Send over more photos! ~S~

Hey, I flew an Antonov An-2 a couple of times here in Poland. Actually, even our Army still uses them....

Also many aeroclubs use them for dropping ragdolls...i mean, paraguys and paralassies or tourist flights.

Very nice planes, horribly loud, but somehow fun it was to fly them. Yep, I was the co-pilot :)

Falcon would be proud of me;)

Hi Scott - yes it is Tamworth - I live in a village called Warton about 5 miles from there.

I think they used to make the Reliant Robin in Tamworth a few years ago, and they still make black cab taxis there.

Were you a three wheeler then? :D

I will try and post some more pics over the weekend - stuck at work at the moment :(

I loved it so much I kept it, my mum still moans about the wreck on her drive!.

A friend of mine complained that the windscreen broke on his Robin 3 wheeler going over the kerb, (but he was upside down at the time).

Any Harley bikes there? Love them Hogs! :D They banned airshows here because of the safety factors. Last time they had one I sat inside an A-6 Intruder. Man, I missed those days.

There was at least one Harley and I did take a picture - so will make sure I post that at the weekend - that is if I am not still at work :(

Scott - I think the Scimitar and Robin where both made by Reliant in Tamworth - didn't they do a four wheel convertible version of the Scimitar as well? They were a great car, and fibre glass bodies so no rust!

Yup, Reliant built all there cars in Tamworth, Robins, Kittens, Bond Bug and Scims. They also did special contract work including the bodies for the first RS Ford Rally cars and the prototype body for one of the 1970's Ferraris.

The bodies on Scimitars were single piece mouldings and when you scrapped one or had to replace a section you often found messages written inside the box sections- 'help me, I'm being held prisoner' was one of my favorites.

They did a convertable called the GTC but only produced about 400 I think
