okay, need some opinions on this, please.
i believe that the HD is still good on my old lightning struck HP 80 gig drive. and that drive has some pictures and other things on it that i really need to keep. i haven't done this sorta stuff in a while, but can't i just open up the dell carefully, find one of the extra HD cables and plug her in, so that when i re-plug and turn the Dell on, it will show me with two hard drives, and thus i can copy the stuff from the old drive to the new drive?
or will there be a booting issue since the old hard drive also has XP OS installed???? is there something to change in the Bios?
information greatly appreciated.

As you probably know Dell has good online support.
Here is their user forums - http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums
If you troll around there you will also find links to your particular Dell machine's articles on upgrades and maintenance. Sure they will have something with detailed steps and pictures for you mate.
Let me know how you make out.
