I knew a jug pilot from WWII.
He told me that one time he flew through the debris from a train explosion, that he caused..

and some stuff messed his old bird up pretty bad. He got all the altitude he could get and started limping home. His bird gave up and he bellied into a field full of French farmers. After it stopped sliding he jumped out and was looking at the mess when the farmers ran up and started trying to hack a hole in the side of the plane. HE asked them WTH? ( or words to that effect) and the only one that spoke English, said they were trying to get the rest of the crew out of it!!
They thought it was a bomber because it was SO DAMN BIG!!
