High Definition Televisions

Been toying with the crazy notion that I might purchase a new television set for the family room. Presently we have 7-year old JVC CRT 27-inch set (4:3, curved screen).

The new tv would be used for movies and gaming (XBox 360 480p DVD & 720p-1080i games) along with digital cable (might upgrade to receive HD programming too I suppose).

For gaming a CRT set would be ideal (no burn-in or motion artifacts), but can't find anything approaching 40"+ for screen size (Sony has a 35" as do other companies).

Rear projection tvs are not too bad price wise, but tend to be dark for gaming with some limited concern for burn-in.

Plasma and LCD are too expensive to even dream about, at least what I'm looking for.

Any experience with these expensive toys among the Squad folks? My main factors are HD, 16:9 aspect, flat monitor, @40" screen, and something with 480i, 480p, 720p & 1080i. And cheap, real cheap but really nice too.

What's this I hear Falcon giving away his HDTV with that old TIR?

Btw not necessarily looking for exact models, just experience with HD sets would be helpful. Like projection tvs for instance, how often have you needed to replace the bulb? Do you game on your HDTV? etc...

Philips and Sony are very good brands, maybe the best.

Da wiff and I just bought a Philips 37" LCD.

We were looking at a 42+ incher but the top brands are too expensive.

The 37" turns out to be just right for our medium-sized family room.

Full price is ~$2400 but you can get it for $1900ish if you shop. If you go to Best Buy or Circuit City etc be sure to bring an on-line price from an off-line compeditor to show the salesman and they will prolly match it.

We got ours for about 1850 plus a $300 mounting bracket for free.

Plasma wears out or leaks in about 10 years, but good pic.

Sorry, no info on large CRT displays. Some rear projection TV's are getting brighter. Do mucho shopo on-line and read all the reviews out there.

Nice tv! Thanks for reminding me of the low American prices on electronics.

Just kiddin', I love our 15% HST and inflated prices. "O Canada, our home of expensive electronics . . . "

Do you plan to hook up your computer to this set?

Thanks for the encouragement. Just so much to consider. I might get discouraged and keep our present set FOREVER as a silent protest.

Tact I have a toshiba 32" wlt58 lcd. It has a vga input for the pc.

I tried it with my laptop and it was great! It does 720 1080 and dvd's that are upscaled to 720 or 1080 look fantastic

using hdmi connection

I wanted a 42" but It failed the missus test

Also getting an 800-watt home theatre thingy and upgraded my satellite to a HD receiver. Next is XBox 360 and then to sit back and watch Matt play Call of Duty 2 at Christmas while hiding under the sofa.
