Face Track No IR

Post by :FI:Nellip » Thu Sep 23, 2010 7:23 pm

Got hold of a cheap webcam and tried this out following Declan's post on the squadron forum:

http://facetracknoir.sourceforge.net/home/default.htm

Not sure I have the settings right yet as the movement seems very sluggish - like my head is moving through treacle or something

Will try and tweak it but anyone who knows about this arcane art feel free to make suggestions please [-o<

I suspect the software is adequate enough to do the job.
But you did say you "picked up a cheap webcam." (Operative word is "cheap")

I haven't used this method since I already have TrIR, but my guess is that regardless how much you tweak the software you won't see much of an improvement unless you get a good webcam. Don't skimp on the pence. Plan to spend 30-60 GBP for a good one.

A good cam will get you much better frame rates, and vastly reduce ( if not eliminate ) the amount of tweaking necessary.

The Microsoft LifeCam comes to mind...
Very good reviews on the higher-end model.

And for those not already blessed with TrIR, the webcam method will run about half the cost of TrIR...

Hmm - was fairly cheap (£10 reduced from £25) but an OK brand - Logitech C120 - so hoped it would be OK?

Well - after 8 years of using a track ball maybe I should stick with that.

Maybe its because my face is an odd shape
