hm SP3 freezing maybe but unlikey.
Running those RegCleaners can be more hassle then they are worth. You would be better reinstalling XP.
Turn off you AV when you are playing a game much quicker.
Have you a swap drive setup ?
Have you stopped all unnecessary processes when playing games?
When you get to 89-90% of the AV scan doe it say which directory ?
Registry cleaner?
