Silent Hunter IV: Sinking The Yamamoto

Post by :FI:Genosse » Fri Dec 21, 2007 3:05 pm

Folks!

Today I´ve had the time to fiddle around a bit with SH4 and so I started a single player game containing a patrol mission in the Philppine Sea in 1944. Here´s my brief story about my encounter with the Yamamoto in my Balao class submarine presented to you in a sequence of images ...

Enjoy it, folks! ^:)

Image
Diving down to approx. 440ft at a speed of 8 kn heading SW

Image
Sonar spotted huge fleet of vessels crossing from NW to SE

Image
Mission´s objective: seeking, finding and sinking the Yamamoto

Image
A flight of Wildcats kept the IJN crew on the decks busy

Image
Getting up to periscope depth

Image
Aimed and all six front eels off

Image
Torpedos on their way, Commander!

Image
All six torps hit the giant´s port side \:D/

Image
GAH! She was still floating!

Image
It looked like the IJN fleet was a bit mixed up 8)

Image
Taking a sneak peak on the Yamamoto´s starboard side

Image
Obviously she lost fuel

Image
Using the recently reloaded torps

Image
Incoming ...

Image
... and hitting successfully

Image
In the meanwhile ...

Image
This collision ...

Image
... wasn´t certainly intended!

Image
Naval AAA ...

Image
... was still shooting down the cats

Image
Appearing on Yamamoto´s port side again

Image
Releasing all four stern torpedos

Image
Looked good ...

Image
... yet they hit much better! ;)

Image
Crew left the bleeding giant =D]

Image
There she went: Japan´s biggest battleship

Image
Sinking to ...

Image
... the Philippines Sea´s ground

I hope you liked it, folks! :D

I started my career with a Gar class sub and sank an escort carrier! There are some pretty neat mods at subsim. The graphics especially the foam and a great improvement on the sounds. Now you can hear the ejection of the deck gun shells. I tweaked my NVidia card and the graphics are awesome, especially the water. I'll be home for a full five days this season and SH4, Crysis and CoD4 will be taking up some of my time. 8)

Incredible graphics- my only criticism would be the Brewster Buffaloes- even early war these never flew a mission from a carrier.

So far it's very good; it does not have the eye candy of SH4 but it more then makes up for it in game play. In SH 4 I found that you had to fairly unlucky to get sunk or damaged @ any stage of the war; in GWX 2 the escorts are on you right away and they stay with you for hours. I have only completd 1 year so far 39-41 and already I have had to dive the boat down to 235m to get away from the escorts many times. They seem to have reduced the range that you see objects in day light but even more so at night or misty weather; so you could go in on a convoy but you might only be able to make out 1 or 2 ships @ a time. The boat pitches and roll's like crazy making aiming very hard both with the deck gun and the parascope. There are loads of new targets both merchant and war ships which is good for your tonnage but a bear when your trying to decide what exactly your about to shoot @. But get back to me when I reach late 42-43 and I'll be able to tell you more

Frank,

Well presented mission. It was a big ship...I beleive its last (only) mission was to be skuttled on the beach at Okinawa to be used as coastal defence...It was sunk on the way to Okinawa by aircraft...11 torpedoes, 7 bombs.

Merry Cristmas,
Igor

Biggest thing I found to sink was the huge passenger ships.. some Captain's have all the luck!

I'm playing a new campaign with an S-18 sub. Small bastards but could dive fast. I chose to tweak the realistic settings on Realistic and have manual targeting turned off (yeah, I'm lazy). I installed Sober's Super Mod and other mods and the sounds are fantasic on a Bose Speaker System. I sank a Modern Passenger liner in the 1st patrol and a Large Composite Freighter in the second. You have to get up close (1000m) to get a god hit but can't catch those warships. The S-18 is slower than a Merchant vessel. :?
