Is the "SAPHIRE" better than the regular old, garden variety ATI?

Know anything about HIS?

Wouldnt know about that may last (9200) was a Saphire too, still works but not up to running IL2 after 4.04.

The X1650 is the next on up from mine , and has a bit more "grunt"

We´re talking about AGP, right?

´k, let´s see:

- On the ATI side we have the Radeon X1950 PRO with 256 or 512 MByte memory

The advantage against the 1650 is that the 1950´s have 256 bit memory and the 1650 only 128 bit ones. And they use GDDR3 instead of GDDR2.

And the Nvidia side there is the NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT also with 256 and 512 MByte memory.

That´s the fastest on AGP as I know - oth around 180 - 200 $ I think.

The power of video cards depends on other parts of your computer system, like RAM and Processor.
Does your mainboard support AGP 8x ?

True but considering "Bang for buck", what will it deliver for twice the price?

What CPU are you using Willie? You may find that will determine the limits for any GPU you install.

I went from a 9800Pro(128mb ram) to a Sapphire X1950Pro (512mb Ram) in Agp and you will be blown away with the difference in frame rates with higher res and AA/AF settings.

For me this card really is the dogs bollocks and you can get it quite cheaply now.

Go for it WIllie you won't be dissapointed.

I'm amazed how this phrase has spread since first coined at a Biker benefit gig in the '80s at Lloyd Park Pavillion in Walthamstow.

I wonder where "Combo Pete" is now.

System:
P4@3.00G w/Hyper threading ( PRESCOTT )
1.5G PC3200 RAM

ABIT IC7 MAXIII mobo

400W PSU ( at the moment )

bunch of peripheral stuff, 3 HD's, 2 opticals, a floppy and dog's bollocks in a pear tree..

AND the mobo supports 8X AGP. :D

I bought an NVidia GeForce 8500 GT with 512mb. Works fine but I'm saving up for a 8800 Ultra or whatever surpasses that at the time.

Yes, but we´re talking about AGP here, not about who has the best video card ;)

What I'm simply pointing out to Unka Willie is that the 8500 GT is value for your money. It's powerful and not that expensive. Now, excuse me while I run Airway out of the garden with a cow. BTW go PCI Express 'cause AGP cards will be kaput soon. ;)

BTW go PCI Express 'cause AGP cards will be kaput soon. Wink
Which will mean a mobo replacement at very least.
Fitting a video card that will get the best out of your existing system should see you through to BoB at least, and for not too many bucks.

Right on Sneaks!! ;)

AB go sell all the cows on that island and then spend $800USD and buy a big vid card. Until then, I'll be running AGP stuff with P4's and spending my money on other fun stuff rather than on the latest and greatest, soon to be replaced by something else stuff. Why? BECAUSE my stuff has already been replaced and my stuff still runs very nicely.

Back to where I was. Sneak, know anything about this series of cards?

I'm still digging.
