random event idea

Hey all-
Anyone have any interest in congregating for some kind of a practice event semi-regularly? I was thinking of a dogfight with no labels (like on Sunday) where you have unlimited ammo and are invincible. This way, the pros could pound on the n00bs without shooting them down, giving "how to escape" advice and trash-talk while they tink-tink-tink on the n00bs hull. Sort of non-lethal target practice, like laser tag.
Just a thought. I can't even imagine when I'd have time to participate, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

As for shooting instruction ...
you DON'T want ME to teach you that!

PS: That "invincible" thingie kinna erks me, but I'll go along with whatever.

Well, I'll be more than happy to host. It's only one port to forward (right?) and as long as it's about 20 or less I wager my cable can handle it.
One of these days maybe we can test my server?
Also, do most people set up a dedicated server on their machine and join it or just host/play at the same time?

Sounds ok. At least I won't get killed whilst landing and hitting the squadron's outhouse.

Right!
Then Gur,
give us a time,
check a map and EXACTLY convert it to Trinidad time for AltarBoy.
He's special and needs extra help,
and mayhap we can get it goin'.
I'm not your first choice for tactical help,
but I can help a wee bit in that regard.

Really? The idea I had in mind was a sort of gentleman's practice, where a tink-tink entitles you to a point and more importantly, the right to mock. It's the unlimited ammo thing that I'm not as into. Invincibility doesn't promote bad escape habits, especially with the embarrassing stream of insults from the shotter, but unlimited ammo can sure promote bad shooting habits!
When someone's tinking you, you generally don't have enough time to try new things (hence, invincibility).
In my racing groups we used to get together and chase each other around the track, waiting for spinners and take turns leading, complete with trash talk. Sparring is a great time
Maybe we can give it a shot, and if it sucks, we'll never speak of it again

I've put up a test server from hyperlobby. Could someone try connecting to see if it works?
It's :FI: sparring (invulnerable) v4.05m
I didn't think anyone would mind if I used :FI: for my server name so it's easy to find. Is that okay?
Thanks!

Great idea mate. I can only see one or, possibly two, troubles with it. Sparring, as you say, is great fun and is necessary for learning. However, the first problem I see is the "invincibility." Mostly due to the fact that if you aren't falling out of the sky, you don't know how bad you were hit. One can be hit, fall away or extend, and survive to defeat your opponent. Additionally, unlimited ammo might lead some to spray without actually lining up the shot in a sort of "spray and pray" methodology of getting "plinks".
Practice like you play, as my coach always said.
If I might suggest, perhaps you could set it up so that there are a large number of planes per side, I'm unsure of the limit, if there is one.
I'm not bashing the idea as a whole, if I'm available, I'll try anything if I have the proper version to play. But I thought I'd throw some ideas at you.

Snoopbaron used to run occasional practice sessions using these settings, I think it's a good idea. I have the switcher utility, but Id still rather use 4.071, since I seem to have to reinstall MatManager everytime I use the switcher.

Hey Snaphoo,
I do quite appreciate constructive criticism. I have (yet again) swung towards "limited ammo". With respect to invincibility, I think I am going to keep doing my own thing in this filthy little corner. If you enjoy it, show up and school me. If not, that's cool too
I certainly do like knowing how badly you were hit, but I feel there's a large degree of random in what exactly a given bullet does to your plane. There are regions with better odds, but I'd prefer not to interrupt the flow with 5 minutes of take-off every time you shoot me down when I could be learning more. Plus, if you rack on me for awhile and run out of bullets, you could take a turn running from me before you go refill.
Certainly we should have some kind of a gentleman's agreement where if you nail the wings, you can laugh. If you pound on the tail, you can laugh harder, and if you hit the cockpit, you are allowed to make mother comments.
I agree about the map. I love flying around the mountains! Gives you obstacles to hide behind and do tricks around.
Also, WRT to boundaries/bases, this may sound like a strange idea to you old pros, but I would just have us all start at the same base so we can get right into the action with no AA guns. The game isn't keeping score, after all, our trash talk is.
Glad the server works! See you up there!

I'll give it a try GS.
I agree with the lads about invulnerability though. I recall doing some practice with a few M8's just practicing manuevering but no shooting. This works fine 1v1 don't think it would with more players. You both try to get on each others tail and the loser tries to shake and reverse position.
Then you can try a few rounds with guns
Shooting with no effect is going to change how you fly IMHO.
Probally the best practice for dogfighting I have tried is the game 'Rabbit'.
:FI:Mikester hosts a game from time to time. Good for shooting, manuevering and defence. You see the improvement quite fast after a night of that game.
And its fun
I'll look out for you tonight. S!
