need some advice about DSL

yes, yes...Bell South has FINALLY seen fit to lower themselves into offering DSL service to my area... geesh! only just this morning i checked and it is available for my phone number. and i am totally clueless on it (as i've never had it before naturally.)

need some advice from you pals that have had it installed for awhile and can tell me what to expect.

1) do they have to come out to the house to run a special line or hook something up? or just flip a switch or something? do they install the FREE 50.00 broadband modem?

2) is it simply as easy as (after dsl is working in the house) plugging the broadband modem into the wall jack and then connecting to my computer (as per dialup?) if not, what do i have to do?

3) will i need any special stuff... equipment? firewall other than what comes with XP service pack 2 plus updates?

4) what sort of package do i need for gaming? they offer several. good, better, even better, best---which i can't afford by the way.

5) i'll still need to keep my normal internet provider, right? which also is SW Bell, by the way.

6) any other helpful hints or info?

i am VERY excited over this... my dog... running and trying to surf and work and play games over dialup has been a friggin' nightmare for so very long... maybe at last i can keep from getting bumped out of online games for having a 600 ping!

a very excited, Beowolff

Dont know what the score is with modems and routers in the US but here in the UK some ISP's provide them on sign up, I've just had a line put in at my other location but have to buy the modem/router. Could have got a free one with AOL, but thats 2meg,I've gone Bulldog (Cable and Wireless in the UK) have to get a £30 modem but up to 8meg (and free landline calls).Guess all that is down to checking your service agreement.

You could use a wireless router to connect any other PC's .They would need a USB or PCI adapter.

Any phones connected need line filters which will come with the modem/router (got 3 with mine)

As long as you've got a cable service (not the poxy wireless broadband
I'm using at the studio with an infinite ping- too much packet latency for gaming), everything should be "hunky Dora"

Your regular Firewall and security should be fine.It may need setting up for the new service. It might be prudent to disable Dial up in Windows once youve got Broadband connection. I know of some instances of Hi-jacking software attempting to connect to premium rate lines .

I'll be setting my main system up next weekend probably now .

dont understand about keeping Dial-up ,thought you'd just get an upgrade to your ISP (thats how it normally works here)

As follows:

1) Odds are they'll mail you your DSL Modem. The package should include an easy-to-follow CD tutorial, CAT 5 cable, USB cable, and approximately three line filters for any phones used. Very easy to install yourself. Cheaper, too.

2) The included instructions should give sufficient instructions to get you up and running within the hour. Definitely use the Tech Support if you run into any problems. As easy as doing a dial-up. Once you're connected, you're always connected.

3) No special additional equipment needed, unless you're networking with another PC or want to add a seperate router.
Your Windows Firewall is adequate, but continue to use AV and Anti-Spyware programs. I recommend AVG anti-virus and Spybot Search and Destroy. They have FREE versions that work VERY well, and are quite user-friendly.

4) Get the best package you can afford. ANYTHING is better than dial-up!

5) If SW Bell is your current ISP you probably won't change anything. You WILL see a BIG difference in DLs and gameplay!!! No more overnight downlod times! Think .5 to 1.0 hr, instead!

6) If SW Bell offers any firmware upgrades via their site, take advantage and upgrade ASAP.

are they still delivering mail in Sweden by bicycle? (visions of sweating, rapidly pedaling postman comes to mind)

that could be why you've not gotten it yet!

Or Maybe...

...a Swedish bicycling Postman of Chinese extraction?

Or not.

If you were in Grants, the LAST thing you'd do is complain about slow mail service. These folks take it personal, and delay it even longer!

I'll never tell the regular postman that his Christmas replacement (his brother, it seems  ) is a total idiot.

well, i know what you mean, Helo. sort of like taking the trouble to write "FRAGILE! BREAKABLE!" on the outside of your shipped carton or box. that's like waving a red flag in front of a bull's nose!

(postal crew) "what's this---FRAGILE---he says?" "Breakable---he says?"

"well---we'll see if that's really so, eh lads?"

Drop! Kick! Throw! Punt!

(later)

"Well, now ain't that too bad...it really was fragile..."

That his local postie just leaves the sacks of mail in a field!

Maybe if we wait 80 years ot so they'll be able to send them as E-mail attatchments.

Well regarding the Swedish Mail Bicycle´s I can´t complain...

About a year ago we got a new "mail-man" pedaling along with her bicycle, yea it was a she! about 5´5´´ with long blond hair and a nice rack...

Some exese pound in the middle area thoo...ie a fat-arsed one...

About a year later she was one of the best looking women I have ever seen!

Fantastic long slim leg´s and an arse one could kill for....So no complains about the bicycles from me M8´s...

How does your lokal mail-man look?

My guy...

is six-foot ten, fat as a fu*k and has REALLY long arms so that he doesn't ahve to get out of his car when dropping the mail in my mailbox by the side of the road....

I think you're winning this one Lars :)
