okay, mid life crisis... picked up my NEW Honda Shadow Aero this afternoon.... my God! been awhile since i've been on a bike. this retro-styled (looks like a 1950's) cruiser is GREAT... but scary. i was freaked out all the way home on the bad boy...its been THAT long since i rode one. ahhh, but about halfway home, i started getting that old "feeling" back...one with the rode...you know...a melding of man and machine. uh, yeah, that sounds cool, a melding of man and machine.

anyone else driving one of this sweetspot bikes? or heck, just what ARE you driving (if you drive a bike?)

really, it was fun... but the last part of the ride WAS the best. i can't wait until tomorrow to RIDE that baby again.

It's a 1990 Dnepr 650. Made in the former USSR (now Ukraine).

It's based on a 1930s BMW design, but updated to a 50s-60s engine style with a swingarm on the back...





I spend quite a bit of time fiddling with the engine, but then I enjoy doing that... so it suits me fine

I almost bought one of those V-Star Yamahas a couple of years back... same deal as your VT750.... they are a comfortable bike...

It was a bone stock old 74 It had a late model "juice" front end. Kick only, 6 volt generator (pia) oil leakin' slow turnin, easy cruisin', cantankerous, breakin down, FUN sumbitch.

That old 6 to 1 compression 74 would set off more car alarms than that hard slammin 10 to 1 90 incher.

The rear rocker tin leaked horribly. The 70wt oil would run down on the rear exhaust pipe and cook nicely. When sittin at a stop light, it looked like my nuts were on fire.. It was a hoot. Sold it to a rich guy with NO driver's license out in Kalifornicate.. It's his problem now.

93" $&$ genny case motor with alternator left case, BIG ASSED lumpy cam.. $TD pan style shovel heads. (big valves and shovel intake and exh) ought to be crankin aobut 100HP.. Tryin to keep the weight below 450lbs. All it needs is a transfusion of MONEY!!

i got to ride my Aero yesterday afternoon... ah, great feeling, soaring down the roads out here. one thing about living in the sticks is that out here we've got some good "fun" roads to ride on...curves galore, hills, dales, etc... and little traffic except for the cows, farmer's tractor and occasional car.... worst thing to watch for is the deer! yep...killers on the road right there!

anyway, the Aero is so far PERFECT for me. responsive, quick, nimble, handles very very well...very little vibration. all in all a slick machine that looks totally bad (as in good) to me. i love it. i found a few halfway safe straightways where i could wind her up... hits 80mph without a thought...but scares me...so i'm usually just cruising around about 50. that windshield is fab... sissy mabe, but still, it knocking that cold wind off of my body is a real boon for an old guy like me. this machine just simply sits well...with its low slung style and seat...putting the center of gravity low to the road for balance and handling. i LOVE the shaft drive! YES! no chain rattling, no slinging grease and oil, no constant chain adjustments....just pure direct power when and where i need it and without a thought as to getting somewhere and discovering i've got to take out links to get home. good idea there.

i have to admit, i was a little spooked by riding this bike, after all, as said before, it's been a LONG time since i've even been on any motorcycle...and the Aero is no kid's toy at 600 pounds... but hey, after only a few miles of riding it, the old confidence and ability is coming back and i'm feeling much better about it all.

its raining cats and dogs out there now, so i suppose my wussy tail will not be riding this afternoon, but i hope to be up to near full speed (back in the saddle confidence) by this weekend...so i can take her out for a good long spin, say to Memphis and back.

by the way, Fen... that sidecar is nifty as hell... would look so much better though if you could mount a fifty caliber browning on it!

willie, love those old bikes of yours...cool as hell...but does your sweetie REALLY like them? she's not smiling very much.

my wife is already on my arse about mine...ie, the "you're spending TOO much time messing with the bike and not doing your chores," thingy!

I did the same thing back in 2002 but I bought a Honda Nighthawk 750. I had never been out of my home state of Missouri untill I got my motorcycle. Since then I have been to about fifteen different states and am a member of the Iron Butt Association ( http://www.ironbutt.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ).
I still do one or two big trips a year and really enjoy it. I know you will enjoy yours too. I like your Shadow it has a nice retro look.

Fenster, I REALLY would like to have one of those rigs BUT for the fact that I'd killed over here in one. Folks drive WAY too fast around here for those things. Seein a cool lookin, bad ass Machine gun thingy on one MIGHT slow 'em down for a half second or so.
