I bit the bullet and bought XP w/ SP2.

All programs installed and work fine...EXCEPT FB/AEP/PF, dammit!

Installtions go perfectly, all the way up to finishing the PF merged, but it wouldl not load the game!

Uninstalled everything Il2, cleaned the registry, etc., then started again. This time I tried verifying. Tried to load plain ol' vanilla FB. Won't load. The HD lights flicker for awhile as if something will happen, but then stop.

Any suggestions?

Take a look here, please ...

You need the pirate version of XP/SP2... seems to work for everyone.

Ok, again...

Frank, thanks for the links. I feel like noob all over again.

Gurb, actually I do have a(cough)nother copy of XP. One leetle problem is that it is all in Dutch and there are no English files to access during setup.
Other than that it installed like a charm!

Spent today formatting and re-installing XP and some necessary utilities and such. Tomorrow will attempt FB+ again using links provided by Frank.

Hope all had a good session today. Sorry I missed it.

Possible solutions

Well, Dan ...

What about this?
This may be an issue with the music that plays during the installation of the game. Try turning down your sound card hardware acceleration level to 'none', then try the install again.

To do this:

1. Click Start, then Run.
2. Type: dxdiag and click OK.
3. Click on the 'sound' tab.
4. Move the sound hardware slider down to 'none', then close DXDiag and try installing IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles again.
Eureka!... By Jove Watson, I do believe we have solved another mystery.

It was the dual channel RAM! I removed 1 512mb stick and everything went smooth as silk. For whatever reason, the Abit mobo, chipset drivers or whatever, it can't handle a full system install with dual channel enabled.
Any help?

Not really enough to go on here mates. :?

Assuming Helo has installed XP and the game flawlessly (which I'm sure he has done), and without tweaking (i.e., disabling) anything yet with the OS, try launching IL-2 with no sound and safe video settings. If it loads then carefully select each sound/video option one at a time until you run into this problem.

Is it possible that the multiple OS setup is causing a problem? Didn't you have IL-2 installed under the Windows 2000 OS too? Can't imagine but is there some sort of conflict? Just double-check your Registry in Windows XP and make sure your IL-2 entries are valid.

Helo knows all about this PC stuff. I'm sure you have double-checked all your system components - video & sound card, etc - to make sure everything is working. New memory is properly setup and recognized, right? You have virtual memory setup too, right? IL-2 is probably the largest program you will run on the machine, something like @700+MB plus everything else. Does it start to load - splash screen with a percentage - then stops?

Let us know how you are doing Helo, and what you have discovered/tried.

Regards,
TS!

I feel for you Dan - I had no end of problems with my new PC trying to get PF and Teamspeak to work properly.

Some encouragement for you - it only took me three weeks to sort it all :) , a bright guy like you should have it sorted in no time :)

XP installed.
DX9.0c.
1gb RAM.

Numerous attempts to install PFm and load same unsuccessful.
Ran DXDiag, adjusted hardware accelleration to "zero", and disabled music port. No Luck! (And I'll be damned if I'm gonna remove 512mb of RAM now that I can use it!)

Uninstalled/Re-installed Oleg's babies an additional two times. No luck.

Then, for the pure hell of it, I changed the FB Setup Video selection to "DirectX". Voila!!!!!

It loads! It runs! It has FPS issues!!!

Anyone with any DX tweaking suggestions (artfully delivered, of course) gets a free beer...or two...or three.
