OK - for those mates who showed an interest - I am back and running on a new hard drive - kept the old one as back up for now but will replace when I have the readies.

Thanks for all the help advice. One thing I have noticed already is how much quicker the disk access is on the new drive. At least 50% quicker than before.

Hopefully I will be able to fly this evening after all.

Once again, thanks for all the advice, it was really useful and supportive.

Glad yer back and up to a better speed. :D

One thing that came back to my addled memory was the last total HD failure I had. It seems that my BIOS chip went haywire and was screwing up the search mode of the disc. The head was slamming the sides and it destroyed itself. I was able to salvage the data after I replaced the BIOS chip, but the disc was done for.

Hope that isn't the case with your machine, but if the new disc starts making noises, I'd sure do some more digging around in the machine. ;)
