http://www.digital-daily.com/video/hd2400pro_vs_8400gs/

Compare here HD2400 is still 64 bit vs 128 bit of X1600 series

Overclocked? what heat considerations here? ATI tool can probably do as much if you're really into overclocking.
(Texas can be as hot as Trinidad right?)

I don't know of anyone running one of these, but I suppose you could look for some benchmark comparisons.

I'd be inclined to go with the X1650 or X1950. May want to consider a 7800GTX if you can find one at the right price (at least you'll get "Water=4")

AH! looks like Murph has something for you :)

Murph, done.

Phoenix's comparison link at TOM'S showed the 1950 to be the real hoss.

Heat? Yep we got it, BUT I have air conditioning. ;) I still say A/B ought ot build his new PC in a refrigerator.

Good idea, Willie!

In fact I have no a/c and the new rig runs fine. No external fan used. There's lots of room inside the case for good air circulation. If I were you Willie and you have the cash to save look to the future and invest in a PCI Express card and supporting mobo. I was an ATI user and my old X800 Pro gave me a couple of years good service but because they lagged behind in the latest shaders I opted for NVidia. Downside? NVidia can be a bit more expensive. Willie, if you go with the X1950Pro check the power requirements and make sure your power supply is adequate.

The Saphire X1950 Pro uses TWO 12v pin adapters. I was lucky my power supply had extra 12v rails. When I initially plugged it in I only put one pin on the card it it didn't work. Like the bloke I am I did not read the instructions

Happy hunting.

I have the HIS Radeon HD 2600 XT IceQ Turbo Video Card - 512MB GDDR3, AGP 4x/8x, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, HDMI Support, Video Card.

Runs sweet maxed out on Il2. Used it for Crysis and COD4 as well and it never gave a stutter.

I would recomend it anytime and pricewise better than the 8600 -8800 equivalent.
