owing to my awful aim AND the fact that i have normally had a few drinks when im playing il2 online, i have often been in a situation where i am out of ammo very early in the mission.
is there some way of resupplying my plane? i,e do i have to land at a friendly airbase and press some key ?
or do i have to leave and rejoin?

Sadly, in dogfights the only way to reload/refuel is to land at a base, press Esc, and press the refly button on the screen.
In coops you cant do this and will need to wait for the next mission.

As a) might take some time(it did for me) and b) is out of the question for all of us
I suggest taking a plane with lots of ammo and desent guns to practise with,
