Wish I had that kind of passion.

Awesome stuff there Falcon. . . and I thought I was anal about my skins. I had no idea this much thought went into your skins. Where do you get your reference material. I have lots of books and use the internet, but still usually come up short on some particular part of the skin.

the next step or three are big ones ...

Image

I'm a wee bit short of time today, but I may better document the next steps later.

What has been done since last post:

- added duplicated white line, hatch and rivet layers over most existing black line, hatch and rivet layers. Then, I shifted whole fields of white stuff over one pixel and in some cases down or up one additional pixel. This is one of the best known and quickest techniques to create a good 3D effect. With proper use you can create ridges, valleys, dimples and bumps. I may have some pics to show this later.

- added a blur layer over most lines and hatches. This blurred line ages the work. In some cases it is a small blur and in some a wide blur. Opacities of these areas are usually brought down to a very low percentage.

- continued work on control surfaces; rudder and ailerons are next.

- continued looking for stuff, the struts, pitot tube and other parts were/are nicely hidden.

- added preliminary smoke behind stacks

- more graphics tested. Semi-authentic Irish ac will have two-letter identifiers. (Ex: Heloego = HE@FI, Fenian = FE@FI, etc.)

- brought down all line, rivet and hatch opacity to low levels. Black lines over light blue will have an opacity of ~5-15% while black lines over dark blue areas will have higher opacities of ~ 10-30% for example.

-added a "darker lines" layer that better defines the design; areas like wing root fairings. Areas where larger gaps may occur because of wear like cowling panels and cockpit door are also accented with darker lines.

as far as time spent?

this last bit only took ~2-3 hours,

once you get a good corrected void and are familiar with your personal techniques, you can do a lot of stuff fairly quickly.

noter ...

Dawg, I have tons of material (links/files) amassed from the past three years, I'll try and list some for you later, but actually in many/most cases I just "Google"

Example:

"spitfire Vc" profile (or walkaround, model review, drawings, history, decals, etc) SEARCH

Thanks in advance.

P.S is it me or is skinning the wrong word here, surely it has nothing to do with Taxidermy(spelling?).

P.P.S lets leave ferrets, penguins and sheep out of this stuffing business.

I know I skipped explaining the last steps. If you have specific questions, please ask.

You will note that you can see the desert middle stone/dark earth color scheme beneath the navy blue paint, the blue wasn't on the ac long enough to wear badly (i fink) so I painted accordingly. Wear would be more impact damage (chips) than sun and rubbing. Some of the repainting onboard the Wasp really sucked. I couldn't bring myself to do that so I kinna gave you one of the better paint jobs. The light blue underside probably didn't change.

If you have comments or suggestions, hammer away.

gah!

The more research I do the more muddled the info gets. Reports of the colors for the Malta blue Spitfires range from light blue to dark brown; from painted completey to just the tops. I have not read anything about whether the ac were repainted after arrival at Malta but another thing to consider about the wear subject is that the paint may have been applied SO poorly that the paint may have worn off quickly.

<sigh>

Anyway, you get what you get folks.

Enjoy Falcon's fractured forays into history!
