Hey now hang on just a minute!!!
I must point out that Macca's sentiments are NOT shared by all Europeans.
I personally take pride in not weaing socks. In fact, socks were unheard of in Ireland until 1986. They were introduced by a French discount clothing chain who thought they had stumbled upon a lucritive market opportunity. What they failed to realise however was that the Irish are traditionally a barefooted people,
calloused and xenophobic. The combination of storytelling, heavy drinking, and walking for miles and miles along stoney roads left the Irish in constant discomfort but the very notion that some
alien haberdasher had developed a device to alleviate said discomfort was widely perceived as an
affront to the people's very
Irishness! So, the Irish gathered all of the socks and rounded up the sock sympathisers, locked them into a warehouse that was packed with explosives, and on June 16, 1986, sent the whole lot to kingdome come.
Every year since then on June 16 the Irish hold a commemoration.
It's known as...
(wait for it)
...BOOMSDAY!!!
