I've been out of the 'build a puter' mode for several years and much has changed since I built one. The first thing I do to kinna get a sense of what's going on is to pick up a PC Gamer mag and check out their Hard Stuff Trinity. This month, Dec 2011, they have this for a mid-range game comp.

Case and PSU: Corsair 800D, Corsair TX 750W PSU $395

Processor: Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz $315

Motherboard: Asus P8P67 Deluxe LGA 1155 $230

Memory: 8GB Patriot Gamer 2 Series DDR3-1600 $100

Optical Drive: Samsung Black SH-S223L LightScribe $20

Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB $70

Sound Card: Creative X-Fi Sound Blaster Titanium $87

Video Card: Gigabyte Super Overclock Series GeForce GTX 560 Ti $265

total ~$1482

This is a great place to start. Everything works together and you can find reviews and tests of similar products to compare.

Have at it Eamond!

So many options nowadays... even going back just 5 years the options in terms of disk type and even arrays was soooo different.

A new monitor (or 2?) to be included in the budget.

Are other bits still up to scratch, e.g. Track IR and joystick

Any change you could probably by a nice little second home in Greece (once they come out of the Euro)
