29th August

Post by :FI:Nellip » Fri Aug 27, 2010 12:57 pm

Assuming no one else has anything for Sunday, there are 3 missions available for a P47 Normandy scenario.

1. A dogfight warm up session using Olegs Normandy map. Uses Zuti's MDS.
2. A bomber escort coop mission using an air start
3. A ground attack coop, take off required.

All missions in HSFX 1.11.

12 seats available in the coops.

We may not have time for both coops as they run to over an hour each. If host aborts before landing we may manage them.

Hope those who flew Sunday's P47 bomber escort mission enjoyed it. From a mission builders perspective this is my feedback, in terms of what I was trying to achieve and how well we did.

Mission was to fly out into France to rendezvous with a force of B17's returning from a daylight raid. Usual tight FI formation ensued with a number of stragglers but around half the P47's managed to stay in reasonable touch and we didn't lose anyone so =D]

By having a long flight to make before rendezvous I was trying to give a bit of a navigation challenge and create some tension as to whether we would find the B17's or not. I though that worked. We should have flown a course of 110 and as the B17's were flying the reciprocal course meeting up should have been easy. By my reckoning we flew an average of around 107 or 108. Now over short distances that doesn't matter too much, but with a long flight to intercept point it mean't we very nearly missed the B17's - thanks to eagle eyed Frank for spotting them at his 3 o'clock as we flew past. =D]

Once we rendezvoused I wanted to create some tension again by not having the Luftwaffe attack straight away, and when they did arrive not having them all attack at once. From my perspective as builder this worked well as there was then pretty much continuous action all the way back. Overall I thought our work against the 190's was OK - main problem of course was everyone going after the same targets and getting dragged down to low level, and not being in position to intercept the next group of fighters. Several bombers were lost because few people stayed at height when the first 190's arrived and so the second wave of 190's could hit the bombers without hindrance until some of us got back up to height again. Had we flown properly as flights, with flight leaders, then we could have done better. For next Sunday could we have 3 volunteers to act as flight leaders, with leader of one flight acting as Squadron Leader? I know that's not the FI way, and I wouldn't want to push people who really don't want to lead into doing so, but after all it's only a game and no-one is actually going to get shot down!!!

As it was four people managed a 190 kill, not sure what our losses were?

One point - why did some of you descend to the same height as the bombers when we found them? "Escort" does not necessarily mean "fly on the wingtip of" - aim is to be in position to intercept any attacking fighters and that means maintaining height whilst maintaining contact with the bombers. Those of you who descended to the same height as the bombers gave up height and therefore speed you could have used when the blue fighters attacked. A major tactical error by the Luftwaffe in the BoB was switching fighters to close escort of the bombers - which was more about politics and reassurance for bomber crews and less about it being the most effective way of intercepting Hurricanes and Spitfires!

Overall I enjoyed it and with the usual FI caveats I thought the mission worked fairly well. Any feedback (good or critical) from those who were there would be welcome.

I plan to have 3 missions available for next Sunday, although we may only have time for 2. Ground attack is the theme and so Stuarts skins can be used I have changed the aircraft to the P47 D27 instead of the D22.

Briefy ...

good brief.

Oh ... and the design of the whole Magilla was great. I noticed how the evil-doers trickled in. Nice touch. Once again, where we came up short was in maintaining a serious, professional procedure that kept us together. That prolly ain't never gonna happen. That's why we need great missions like these to optimize the fun factor.

;)

thx

It was a good mission Neil, the brief was all the help everyone shoud have needed. Timing was near perfect =D] .

I seriously doubt I'll volunteer for the flight leader thing as there are too many folk who cant fly in silence and my tolerance is tested sorely, though the chatter stopped when the 190s came along(why? thats when information is needed). As for folk chasing the 190s down, if you have no definite formation then it will be a free for all, a simple case of everyone thinking that they are in the best position to shoot, resulting in most of the squad miles away from the main task (escorting the bombers).
The same faces are flying every Sunday, why for heavens sake are people not flying in pairs, surely by now folk should have teamed up together, and in doing so have flights made out of two pairs.

No-one should be afraid of taking the lead position, apart from the mission builder everyone should take a turn at leading the Squad on a Sunday.

I could go on, but will resist the urge :)

P.S Could someone send me the appropriate skin please.
