Another Storm for Falc?

Post by Nightcat » Mon Sep 01, 2008 4:13 am

"The mayor of New Orleans has ordered a compulsory evacuation of the city, describing the approaching Hurricane Gustav as "the mother of all storms".

At a news conference, Ray Nagin explained the arrangements to get people away from the city's West Bank and why people must not remain in the city as the hurricane approaches, three years after Hurricane Katrina."

Well Falc, if I'm right then your probably getting ready to ride the mother of all storms, getting pics and wrestling your ferret! good luck, stay safe and keep us posted :D

Thanks Nigh!

Don't listen to Nagan. He's just tryin' to save his job. Yeah, it's gettin' kinna hairy here now, but we're hunker'd down pretty good. All the wee fuzzies are inside. Our next door neighbor gave us a hedgehog, and a baby squirrel to watch while they're gone. They wanted me also to tend to their herd/passle/school/flock/whatever of Madagascar hissing cock-flippin'-roaches!!! I looked thoughtful for a second and said, "Sorry, not enough room".

By 8-ish tomorrow AM we should be getting 100 mph+ winds for about 15 hours or so. We're a whole 25' above sea level here and ~25 miles from the bayou so storm surge shouldn't be a problem. No alligators have flown past the window yet.

Still on the air,

Hey Stu, enjoyed the visit on the ferret phone a while ago.

Keep me posted if the inter web blows out, and I'll relay to the geezers here.

We'll know by Monday mid morning our time.

Get lots of pictures of stuff flying about. #-o

What kinda things do you do for 15 hours when your bunkered down with all those small furrt animals? Have you nailed all your windows shut with cheap pieces of wood? You got one of those underground rooms like in those twister movies? :D

It'll be quite fun, no electricity and a deck of cards and a whining family repeatedly saying, I wonder when we'll get power back .. :D

I would open a wind chime shop for tourists.

And when they come too close, just don't shoot against the wind.
:D

But to get serious agin:
What about the banks (dam?) ?
I've hear the built them up again but not much more strength against natural disasters like Katrina.
Is that true?

It's onshore west of N'Awlins. TV reports I'm seeing aren't showing too many problems other than the usual. It isn't as mean a storm as Katrina was. Right now the storm surge on the East side is coming in so it's be a few more hours yet before they can tell if all the work they did since Katrina was a waste of time or will hold off the flow.

I guess Stu is still sleeping. He didn't answer the ferret phone about 20 minutes ago.

I'm right at 600 miles from the New Orleans area and the outer cloud bands have arrived up here in North Texas. Pretty fair sized bag of wind it is.
Here is the latest GOES "floater" image of that storm.

It's a joke between Stu and myself. Since I have 4 ferrets and he has 2, our cell phones are ferret phones instead of "bat phones".

I just tried to call and got his voice mail. Hard to tell if the system is down or his phone is off. :?

Thanks for the updates Willie..

I guess the difference between you and Stu is that your not 25ft above sea level! the wind damage and such would be about the same.

Why oh why do you people live in these areas and not move to somewhere safer and secure. Insurance must be astronomical, housing prices probably low but high in repairs... I don get it #-o

Still can't get through to Stu, but N.O. faired well considering.

As to why someone would live there? Beats me.. I can't stand that part of the world. Too HOT AND HUMID for my old bones. I can take the heat but the humidity sure makes it rough.

I guess it needs flushing every now and then...  ;)

BTW, most all of the poor dislocated folks from the 9th Ward that flooded so badly last time have been re-located and are now on some other state's "dole". We have several families just up the road from where I live. They are in nice (or they were nice) houses at government (taxpayer's) expense 3 years later!
