BoB Spitfire Mk1

Post by :FI:Falcon » Tue Jul 01, 2008 4:05 pm

Working on a Spitfire Mk1 for '40 ...

Image

I'm using my relatively new MkV template and changing some fuselage lines, upper and lower hatches, lines and gun ports and a few other details to create a Mk 1.

I have enough info to get started, but I want to know if the general colors look good to you. Yes, I'll prolly fade it a bit, but does it look right?

The codes are gonna be fun-fun-FUN again given the fuselage warping.

I've seen the codes on the starboard side as both QJ@A and A@QJ. Which is right?

Was the underside "RAF Sky" or the black/white scheme?

Lots of work to do on detailing hatches and I'll try to put some time in on wear and chippin'.

I'll prolly make "A" and "B" camo patterns available.

Questions?

Advice?

Changes?

The black and white thing was pre BoB I'm sure. I like it the way it is Stu. Put me down for QJ@V.

From wiki article about RAF roundels, backed up by rafweb.org page about markings as well as various model kits found on the internet:

From June 1940 Spitfire Mk I were being shipped to operational squadrons with complete sky blue undersides and type A lower surface roundels of varying size and location. Fin flash should be full-height with red portion meeting leading edge at about 75% height of white and blue portions and corner of white portion also meeting leading edge (see Fig.1). Air Ministry stated that two letter code could be painted fore or aft of roundel with individual aircraft identification letter on opposite side of roundel to squadron code (so both are acceptable and both can be seen in photographs such as Fig.1). Great looking skin Stu. As for the side lettering I would have thought it would be (as you sit in the plane) right side Q@JA and the left QJ@A. Put me down for a set when their done. =D]

I don't think the Q and J would be split ... and I'm never rong!

;)

I'll make a "A-D" and any requested letters:

A, C, E, G ... "A" camo scheme

B, D, F, H ... "B" camo scheme.

EDIT: paint schemes set by squadron number, not fuselage letter

I may fiddle with the template for a week before I make the skins available.

I have a week ... right?

Thanks all for the assistance.

One minor change.

Pilots with even squadron numbers get the A pattern, those with odd numbers get the B pattern.

Yeah!

Frank had to help me install the frakin'rackin' thing!

Gah! You'd think the map makers, who spent uber hours building such nice maps, could spend thirty minutes on a decent instal readme.

~Maybe it's like skinnin'~

After so many rivets and scratch marks and 3d effects ...

you just gotta send it out.

thx Wardog and Nell,

Mark mine with "X" please.

Q? Shouldn't the Yorkshire folk have "GR" sqn. codes? -( just being picky  )
