Vista and Norton with 1946

I have a friend that just got a laptop with Vista and Norton installed. We tried to install 1946, but it wouldn't install. We'd start the Setup, a popup would come up and asked if wanted to allow the setup, we'd hit 'allow' than it would go to the desktop and not do the setup. Whats going on?

Try the install froom the install .exe file on the disc. I had that problem with vista at first because of that stupid norton rubbish. Since then I got rid of norton and put the Free AVG antivirus on and have no probs when intalling anything now :D

Additionally...

Recommend using none of the "Suites" available (Norton, Trend Micro, MacAfee). They tend to hog resources and interfere with the sim unless you turn them off. Trend Micro is one of the worst.

There's a lot of free stuff out there that works as well or better than the suites, and won't hog the resources either.

Vista still uses too much resources even with SP1, so the leaner you can run the PC the better.

Did you get it running Helo ?.

What about Hyperlobby and Teamspeak ?.

Last Sunday my elderly PC almost ground to a halt for no obvious reason and further problems since tend to suggest that after 4 years its getting to the end of its days and not worth trying to repair.

I could really do without it but it looks like I'm in the market for a new PC !!.

I guess there are plenty running Vista by now ? (he says hopefully)

Pretty much all of the new machines come with vista now so if you up to using it then now is the time. Depends what kind of setup your after and what kind of price range.

Running Vista here Scott, any problems give me a yell, I found every problem there was with it and am still here.

games installed and running are, il2, lockon, cod4, SH4, armed assault and red orchestra. TS works after some hard work and industrial language, CH controls and Trackir work also, all in all its not a problem, one thing though, if you go with the 32 bit then it wont recognize any more than about 3gig of RAM, limitations of the system I believe. The 64 bit will recognize over 8 gig of RAM but I'm not sure if the older games will run on it.

Thanks Chaps,

I will look into the 64 bit thing.

Im looking at a machine with 8gb of RAM (free double memory) so I'll want to use it !!.

Well, I've gone and done it.

Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz 12MB Cache 1333MHz
4GB DDR2 800
2x 8800 GT's in SLi
500Gb Hd (7200rpm)
Sound Balster X-Fi Sound

Sold the Missus (well she only had one carefull owner and I was going to swap her for a couple of 20's in three years anyhow)

My old Machine was deemed to be beyond economic repair- swapping memory around had no effect and every so often half the memory would go offline- probably Mainboard.

I upgraded the processor at the expense of 4Gb of Ram- I can always up that later on. I get a 22" monitor which is a big improvement for me over my 17. Its Vista which I am a bit wary of but if others can do so can I.

Price wasn't too bad really and its the first 'me thing' I've bought since going to Duxford last year. I am going to try and cut some graphics/res so can fly on Sunday but if it don't work I will be back when the new toy arrives.

Thats a very good spec what with the two 8800 cards and a quad core chip it should run sweet mate. :D

Vista's not too bad mate but like Vin said there are a few of us running it now so if you need any help just shout ;)
