Windows XP Home will not shut down

Earlier this week my PC installed a Windows update, and since then my machine will not shut down. Whenever I try to shut down it restarts and the only way I can get the machine to power down is if I press and hold the power button?

Anyone else experienced this or can shed any light - Uncle Bill's website mentions something about a clash with a driver on Roxio Easy CD Creator - but I don't have that installed?

Does the updates Shield logo still appear on the shut down button?

Have you tried "System Restore" ?

PS - I've been (foolishly) installing Windows updates, but the only one thats been a PIA is "Genuine Advantage" (A roll back got rid of that one)

Hi Sneaky, thanks for the tips.

I managed to make a bit of progress, and by switching off the automatic restart on error detection I got to a BSD which gives the folllowing:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

the stop error is:

***STOP: 0x0000000A (0x000000B,0x00000002,0x00000000,0x8050EF25)

Whatever the hell that all means

There seems to be multiple possible culprits so a system restore looks the best bet.

So whats that? device/driver /error/conflict.

Might be USB, but thats just a wild guess.

I just installed some updates and no problems here.
I did note that one was for Plug and Play. If you can pin down any conflicting device ; it may be an idea to uninstall/re-install in Device manager and see if Windows assigns it to a non-conflicting address.

(maybe a roll back would be easier

System restore seems to have done the trick - but now I get error messages for Lockon - cannot even uninstall it
