ATC ground/traffic/radio/etc procedures

Post by :FI:Falcon » Sun Jun 11, 2006 6:45 pm

To facilitate ground, traffic pattern, terimal and air radio and operational procedures here's the beginning of a basic instructional series of posts to give youze guyz some idea of how civy pilots do it.

Any one with any military experience can sound off about what differences there may be. The fundamentals are sound.

Here's an old pic I posted a few years back. It shows a carrier, but any runway can be put in its place.

Image

Approaches to an airport can be from several standard directions:

straight-in

base

downwind

crosswind

to the active runway (rw).

Controlers are told aircraft (ac) number, distance, direction and probable/planned/requested approach from the pilot.

Ex: "Germerman Field, this is Spitfire (or pilot name for us), ten miles southwest, inbound, landing left base for the active (active runway)."

The tower may respond:

"Roger RULES (for example), traffic is landing rw 01 (zero-one), traffic is a Spitfire on short final for the active. Call in turning final."

"Roger, tower ... rw zero-one ... looking (for traffic)."

~on final~

"Tower, Rules on final"

"Roger Rules, traffic is no factor (has landed and cleared the rw), clear to land rw 01."

Usually, we will not have a controller so you can use procedures that are used at uncontroled fields.

"Gurb's Backyard Airport Unicom/traffic, this is NightCat in a P-51, five miles out on a left downwind approach, landing on the active."

~on final~

"Gurb traffic, NightCat on final"

~clear of rw~

"Gurb traffic, NightCat clear the active."

There are procedures for ground ops too.

"Sheila Tower/traffic, Tactical ready to taxi to the active for takeoff, aye?"

"Sheila traffic, Tactical ready for takeoff rw 01/the active/etc., northern departure."

"Traffic, Tactical rolling, aye?"

Those are just a few examples. We can develope a specific standard for the :FI: baced on these tenets.

Questions?

Comments?

Funny animal noises?

Excellent Info, Stu!!!

If, during our sessions, someone (ie Falcon) should wish to act as Air Traffic Controller (ATC), I suggest we always address the ATC as "Sheila Tower".
If using a Carrier, make it "Sheila Barge". ;)

In keeping with the :FI: tradition, of course. :D

And Gurb was not vulching! :D I was there and can verify that 109 was not on the ground. ;)

Carrier ops

Post by :FI:Sneaky_Russian » Mon Jun 12, 2006 9:24 am

Will we use the terms "Trap" and "Ball" on carrier landings?
(= base and final)

. . .and any way we can have more wires and nets on the deck?

Trap = bace leg?

Ball = final?

See, that's the kinna military stuff you may wish to use.

I thought the "Ball" was a landing aid, like the flags or instrument/glideslope beam. (Keep the approach on the ball) stuff like that.

JO does it somewhat similar, I'll take you through it and hopefully might be of use.

V170WL to St Pauls Tower, permission to enter right hand landing pattern for Full Stop landing on runway 065 (We use full heading for simplicity)

St Pauls Tower to V170WL, your clear to enter right hand landing pattern for full stop landing on runway 065
(maybe they'll add a bit of airfield info - "Be advised the runway elevation is 60 metres")

V170WL to St. Pauls Tower - Right Crosswind
" " - Right Downwind
" " - Right Base
(If you annoy tower enough they might just tell you to call final)

V170WL to St. Pauls Tower, on final REQUESTING full stop landing on runway 065.

St. Pauls Tower to V170WL your clear for full stop landing on runway 065.

or

St. Pauls Tower to V170WL landing pattern full, fly around fly around.
(so confirm you understand - fly down the runway and start calling your crosswind / downwind / base and final again as you fly the right hand landing pattern again or just final if ATC instructed earlier)

Once down exit onto the nearest taxiway and call "Clear of the Active"
then once parked "Chucks locked and shut down"

JO uses right hand landing patterns, anything left of the field is considered hostile.

Maybe of some use to somebody

Having a job as an Apron Control Officer here's my two-cent's worth:

(After landing ATC hands over control to Apron Control Tower)

Pilot: "Apron, this is Romeo Alpha Foxtrot on taxiway Alpha approaching holding position Zulu."

Controller: "Romeo Alpha Foxtrot , Roger, this is Apron Control, continue taxiing on Alpha, enter Holding Position Zulu and proceed to parking position number one."

Pilot: (Repeats instructions given)

Controller: "Romeo Alpha Foxtrot any chance for a hot date with that Swedish Flight Attendant?"

Pilot: (mutters under his breath). Another bloody Trini! Underpaid-Under sexed and Under here!

For those new to or rusty on carrier ops I've flagged this thread to review pattern procedures. It's certainly not a primer on carrier landings but it can acquaint you with certain aspects of the landing environment.

If anyone wants to copy any old TO/landing info here it may be helpful.

I can run the ATC bit if needed.

"Sheila Tower, this is Spitfire (insert name here) turning to final"

"Spitfire, The Killer at Sheila tower, negative on final. Runway is obstructed. Traffic is three goats and five sheep. Copy?"
