Be careful what you say in front of your computer!

Post by :FI:Falcon » Wed Jan 14, 2009 5:29 pm

Well, I told my old computer that I was building a new system soon and it apparently had a fit. The power supply gave up the ghost. I had her in the Jeep pass by the Best Buy and pick up an Antec 500 and all is right wif the world ... I think. It might be my imagination, but I think my 'puter is staring at me.

Current build, it changes daily:

- Cooler Master CM COSMOS S (RC-1100)
- i7 920 cpu
- ASUS P6T Deluxe - Motherboard
- one (maybe 2 later) Diamond 4870PE51GDI ATI Radeon HD 4870 GDDR5 1GB PCI-E Dual DVI Video Card*
- 3-6G DDR3 memory, Corsair maybe, 1033/1300 (or maybe 1600mhz for OC'g)
- 850 - 1000w psu
- two 7200 rpm 250-500G HDs (Barracuda 7200.10 160 GB???)(Raid0) or a 300G Velociraptor
- a dvd drive or two
- X-Fi sound card maybe
- assorted cpu/gpu/memory coolers.

It's taken me two weeks to get this far. All comments, opinions, advice and psychiatric help are welcome.

thanks,

Falcon

Sounds like a beast - an expensive beast :lol:

I would go for the bigger PSU if you are thinking of adding a second graphics card later, otherwise no quibble. =D]

I'd suggest you go with a pair of hard disks and put them on RAID mode. Faster;) And second to what Nellip said, go with powerful PSU.

Depending on the RAID settings you can have your data more secure, read faster and so on. You can sacrifice storage space for speed, etc.

Well, I stepped in it fer sure! I bought the case Saturday ... I are committed now!

AAAAAAH!

Latest build ... this minute:

Cooler Master CM COSMOS S (RC-1100)

Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz 8M L3 Cache 4.8GT/sec QPI Hyper-Threading Turbo Boost LGA1366 Processor

EVGA X58 3X SLI Core i7 Motherboard

BFG Tech NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 1 GB GDDR3

Corsair TR3X6G1600C8D Dominator 6 GB 3 x 2 GB PC3-12800 1600MHz 240-Pin DDR3 Core i7 Memory Kit

~~~
Working on whether 1600 mhz memory is worth it. If I OC, I s'pose so, but I have VERY little experience OC'g.
thanks for any input,
It's got a turbo, you simply have to drive it fast...... no question about it. OC that Martha Fokker and get it into the stratosphere..HYPER SPACE!! WARP 3 SCOTTY!!!
They make more noise when they asplode when they're going fast. :p
Sounds like a sweet set up. :beer:
Uh why not go the whole way out there?
Simulations are CPU hungry.
So I would recommend a stronger CPU.
Mine is nearly one and a half year old and runs at 3 Ghz per core. So why is the i7 only at 2.66 Ghz?
Especially with programms, not capable of using more than one core you will not use your power but heat up the air around you, causing big clouds and therewith rain what might cause high tides and floodings, dam breaks and yeah well I think you know how the story ends :(
Yeah, Marco, the i7 won't see much performance increase with today's games, but I'm trying to future-proof my next build. We shall see, huh?
Well, I can tell y'all are just riveted to your seats waiting for the next random installment of ...
What's Goin' into Falcon's Computer?!
The Story of the Build So Far:
Doug and Bob are metropolitan policemen with a difference. Doug likes nothing more than slipping into ...
opps, wrong story
~~~

What's Goin' into Falcon's Computer?!

Cooler Master CM COSMOS S (RC-1100) [already bought, subject off limits]

Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz 8M L3 Cache 4.8GT/sec QPI Hyper-Threading Turbo Boost LGA1366 Processor

ASUS P6T Deluxe - Motherboard [doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but I don't know anything about those bells and whistles, except it doesn't have 3-way SLI and I don't see me buying three flippin' $400 video cards ... BIOS is said to be easy and helpful, board is stable ... does that mean it won't fall off the table?]

Zotac ZT-285E3LA-FSP NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 1GB GDDR3 648/2484MHz Video Card [hardest choice in my life!!! ... well apart from that one the priest gave me back in choir. I finally decided on the 280 and zingo! an improved 280 (285) comes out for a few bucks more.

Hard drive still tbd

GPU: mayhap a Corsair 850 or 1000

Memory: Prolly the Corsair TR3X6G1333C9 XMS3 6 GB 3 x 2 GB PC3-10666 1333MHz 240-Pin DDR3 Core i7 Memory Kit or the Dominator for mucho más dinero.

lots of fans, not planning on a sound card

Okay, Ive bored you 'nuff. Any opines still welcome.

Lookin' really really...uh...confusing, so far. ;)

Sounds like a good collection, Stu, but if I may...

...and I will...

Spring for the sound card.

An extra 30 or 40 bucks will make all the diff when you want to listen to the ROAR of the P-11. :)

You can pick up a Turtle Beach Riviera for about 40.00. I finally got sick of probs with the onboard crap sound, and my life is much richer for it.

Really.
