Flight Formation When Large Number Of Friendlies

Post by :FI:Armitage » Mon Mar 09, 2009 6:51 pm

I think we need some coordination on Sunday nights when flying to target. I was flying along as P38 Three (5 acording to numbers as two P38 flights and no number 3/4) slightly below and to the left of P38 lead with P38 6 on my six when all of sudden there were P38s everywhere doing 45+ banks, some doing loops and nearly crashing.

Net effect P38 5 and 6 move off about 1K to the left and above P38 lead so we wouldn't get killed (Last week was worse).

We need to have formations finger 4, diamond etc.

I'm up for a bit of practice to get it right if anyone else is.

The easiest formation would be to echelon right or left, all you have to do is place the aircraft in front into the canopy at your "10" or "2" o'clock and keep it there. It is harder to do than say, but again thats down to practise. Throttle settings are key to any formation flying.

I'll turn up for some practise if folk are interested.

I'll try to make it.

~~~
In-line's cool.
Two elements is cool ...
Either way you just need to keep track of ONE other plane while you scan.
Image
One scans ahead and navs, two watches one and scans left (cross-scan past lead), three watches one and scans to the right, four watches three and scans right.
In lieu of that, or in conjunction with that, I find it helpful simply to ask part of my flight to stay to the left and others to the right of me at all times until further instructions.
~~~

I don't think anyone needs a graphic of "In-line" ...

right?

;)

Here the same out of the lesson of the Sturmovik Jagdfliegerschule:

Some nice pictures showing primary, secondary and third priority watch out areas for these formations.
