In Yorkshire it means 'excuse me old chap, could you please repeat that'.

Being naturally 'carefull' (read sort of mean) it was decided to shorten this enquiry to 'eh'.

EH? is an abbreviation of WTH, often used in the similar context of "Excuse me old chap, I'm not quite sure what you are referring too"

I think

down south we merely get the "huh?" word...coming out more like an explosive grunt/question than an actual spoken word. or the "duh!" sound followed by digging the ass with a crooked middle finger.

or sometimes there's no spoken or grunted word at all...merely a very slack-jawed gaze that relates the same thing.

down here, we don't like a lot of people walking around going "eh?" (or going "que?" for that matter either!) as we consider them carpetbagging yankees (or mexicans) and only good for shooting or stealing from.

(we've never actually gotten over the War Between The States, you see.)

huh? what was my point here? dunno'---seemed to have lost it. (slack-jawed gaze of bewilderment kicking in...) anyways, save yo' Confederate money, boys, cause de South's gonna' rise again!

Beo (beginning to crook crusty middle finger for more gold digging)
